● Location

Welcome to the Flat Tops

Located at the end of the road and the beginning of the wild, Trappers Lake Lodge sits at 9,600 feet in the heart of the White River National Forest. Your journey takes you 51 miles from the town of Meeker, Colorado, winding through the Flat Tops Scenic Byway until the pavement ends and the adventure begins. Surrounded by the 235,000-acre Flat Tops Wilderness, we are the ultimate "end-of-the-road" destination—a place where the air is thinner, the stars are brighter, and the modern world feels a million miles away.

● Directions

Getting There

The map to the right is a perfect example of why GPS is unreliable in remote areas. The pin generated by Google Maps is not dropped to our actual location, but instead to the Trappers Lake Campgrounds.

To avoid any confusion, please read the travel instructions below!

  • Exit I-70 at Rifle, Colorado and head North on Highway 13 towards Meeker, Colorado. Continue through the town of Meeker, be sure to have PLENTY OF FUEL before you leave Meeker. Then turn right on to County Road 8 (about a mile outside of Meeker). Travel on County Road 8 for 40 miles, then turn right on to Trappers Lake Road. Travel on Trappers Lake road for about 10 miles until you see our sign on the left hand side of the road.

  • Exit I-70 at Wolcott, Colorado and head North on Highway 131 towards Yampa, Colorado (you will pass through the towns of Bond, McCoy, and Toponas). Be sure to have PLENTY OF FUEL before you leave Yampa. From Hwy 131 take a left hand turn on to County Road 17. Continue on County Road 17 until you come to a 3-way intersection and continue straight on to County Road 132. Travel County Road 132 (once in Rio Blanco County it turns to County Road 8) for about 45 miles. Take a left on to Trappers Lake Road towards Trappers Lake (just passed Ripple Creek Lodge). Continue on Trappers Lake Road for about 10 miles and we are on your left hand side.

  • Trappers Lake Lodge is located in Northwest Colorado. Depending on your starting point and preference for scenic drives, there are three primary airport options. We highly recommend renting a vehicle with AWD or 4WD for the mountain roads.

    1. Yampa Valley Regional Airport (HDN) – Hayden/Steamboat

    • The Best Choice for Convenience: This is the closest commercial airport to the Lodge.

    • Drive Time: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.

    • The Route: This drive takes you through the town of Yampa and over the Ripple Creek Pass. Note that this route includes more gravel road driving than the approach from Meeker, but it is significantly shorter than driving from Denver.

    2. Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT)

    • The Best Choice for Regional Ease: A great mid-sized airport that is easy to navigate and usually has shorter rental car lines.

    • Drive Time: Approximately 3 hours.

    • The Route: You’ll head North on Highway 13 through Rifle and Meeker. This is a paved, scenic drive until the final 40-mile stretch on County Road 8.

    3. Denver International Airport (DEN)

    • The Best Choice for Flight Options: Offers the most nonstop flights and often the lowest airfare, but requires a longer commitment behind the wheel.

    • Drive Time: Approximately 4.5 to 5.5 hours (depending on I-70 traffic).

    • The Route: A beautiful tour of the Colorado Rockies. You’ll travel West on I-70 to Rifle, then North to Meeker.
